Every home antenna installation is unique, so we left items optional. We break down each option below.
Police Scanner Antenna
A wideband, omni-directional antenna allows you to monitor everything possible from all directions. The ProComm SP800/50BN is the best out-of-home (OOH) on the market. We used to offer several OOH antennas, but the ProComm SP800/50BN is the best value, so we cut out all other options. Some scanner antennas cost upwards of $300, but the gains are marginal at best.
The ProComm SP800/50BN antenna is incredibly easy to assemble (no tools needed), inexpensive, durable, can go on any roof/attic/closet installation and small. Basically, you can use anywhere and have it set up in about 10 minutes. It's awesome, we're sure you'll love it. Scroll down to the 'compare' tab to see technical specs.
Coax Cable
Package includes 50' of RG58 coax with BNC male connectors on each end; add additional coax if needed. Recommended coax length usage for reference:
- 50 feet - 1 story home with pitched roof or 2 story with flat roof
- 100 feet - 2 story home with pitched roof or 3 story with flat roof
For a detailed explanation of coaxial cable (coax), here is the Wikipedia page.
RG58 is an affordable coax cable for police scanner antenna installations. Coated with a 90% rated outer layer, RG58 reduces interference & leakage. Both ends terminate with BNC male, which fits on any scanner or scanner antenna. It's coax, we recommend not overthinking this aspect. If 50' is not enough when you get an antenna, you can always pick one up at local hardware store.
Mast
We ofter 2 mast types, a pole and a J-mount. The mast required depends on how/where you'll install your antenna. Already have a mast on your roof? We highly recommend using what you have if possible.
Grounding Kit
Our police scanner antenna grounding kit provides you with everything needed to ground your antenna with zero technical know-how in about 15 minutes. Basically, you need to put 2 clamps on with a wrench and push one 3-foot stake in the ground. Kit comes with 3 stakes, but only one needs to be used. No equipment or electrical know-how required. Works with any outdoor antenna including all scanner antennas we sell.
This is a safety item that should be used on all outdoor antennas. Protects against electrical shorts and lighting strikes. The antenna grounding kit provides a lower path to a safe discharge point. Also grounding the antenna will "drain off" electrical noise, leaving a cleaner signal. Grounding Kit includes:
- 1/2" ground clamps - 3 included
- 3' 1/2" D galvanized grounding rods - 3 included
- 50' spool of 12.5 gauge aluminized steel ground wire - 1 included
Antenna grounding rules & laws vary greatly depending on the state/city you live in and your homeowners insurance policy, but this kit will have you covered. Some states do not require antenna grounding, but you're putting a metal rod on your home which will act as a lightening magnet—we recommend springing a few extra bucks to ground your antenna.
